Parting Shot

Cody left us on Wednesday, 8 November at around 9.30pm after fighting for his life for 2 and a half hours. God had decided to end his pain and suffering and take Cody up with him to doggie heaven. The vet was unable to do any kind of tests to identify the cause of his condition as all they were trying so hard to do was stablise his condition from the moment I brought him in at 6.45pm. However, we will know the cause in about 3 weeks time from AVA when they conduct the post mortem.
Till today, I still suffer from flashbacks of the days and weekend before this past week. Just last weekend, Cody managed to swim across the "other island" at Tanjong Beach in Sentosa not once but twice back and forth. I was so proud of him. After that, he was totally exhausted and refused to swim for rest of the morning. Though Cody spent a short time with us (about 7 weeks), all of us at home had grown so fond of him. He was a quick and eager learner. At 3 months, he could understand the sit, down and stay command. He was almost toilet trained too. He kept Cav on his toes all the time at home and never gave Cav a moment to catch his breath before the next round of tug or rough play. Cav, the ever so accommodating and tolerant older brother, always let Cody climb all over him and bite his ears, legs and face. He even let Cody charge at him! Only once in a while, Cav would give him a good scolding when he stepped over the line. There was always this low growling sound made by Cody outside our living room when the 2 boys played, the sudden sound of a table hitting against the wall or our footstool being moved out of its normal position or them chasing each other around the house. Whenever I heard the sound of furniture moving or scratching on the floor, I would run out just to spot check on them that they do not get too carried away or else I would end up having to replace all the furniture in the living room. Mind you, we only moved in 2 years ago with totally brand new furnitures!
These days since Cody left us, it's quiet again around the house (back to the Cav only days). There isn't this set of eager eyes and wagging tail to greet me outside my bedroom door or at the backyard gate waiting for me to relase him to play. Cav has gone back to lying around in the house sleeping pretty much most of his time. No one to stimulate him intellectually. There's definitely much less cleaning up to do in the kitchen and backyard area, yes, even on weekday nights, I sometimes had to wash our backyard floor and toilet. Suddenly, I don't seem to be cleaning up after Cody almost every hour that I'm home. Even though it was only 7 weeks that he was with us, it felt like we had gotten so used to one another in the house that it felt like 7 years.
Though some people might think that Cody's "just a dog", to us, he sure wasn't. He had become a companion and friend. He would let Luke & I cuddle him as long as we wanted to, talk, bitch and complain to without having him tell me to "quit it". He was always full of energy whenever we let him out of the backyard to play with Cav and roam the house. Always carefree, happy and satisfied. And to some people, they might think that the grieving is just temporary or "a day or two", to me, the grieving will be forever. Regardless of whether one loses a human being or an animal, when that special bond is broken, and that companion and friend is suddenly taken away from you, you will always feel that emptiness somewhere in your heart and long for him. There is not a single day that passes since he left us, that I have stopped thinking of him and wishing that he was still with us. My only consolation is that God had done him a favour and taken Cody with him so that he would suffer no more. I thank God for this. I now only pray that God will help me accept that Cody had to leave us so soon and trust in Him that Cody is happy with him in doggie heaven. I hope time does heal our wounds.
I'm sure Cody would like to thank his friends at the Bishan dog run; Kaylie, Jaffe, Bear & Baileys for being his friends and welcoming him to the family at the dog run. He always looked forward to his evenings at the dog run with all of you. If any of you would like to share something, or share any special moments where you had a brief encounter with dear Cody on this blog specially dedicated to him, please feel free to drop us a blog comment.
Cody, if you're up there listening to me or watching over me typing this, I want you to know that your Dad, Mom and brother Cav loves and misses you dearly. Take care of yourself and I'm sure we will see each other sometime in the future again.
With lots of love, hugs & kisses,
Eadelin, Luke & your brother Cav
